Oct 06 2019 update after two weeks with no rain. Giganteus and Sinicus going strong with city water from the hose after all my rain barrels are drained. Giganteus has a culm making branches and Sinicus is just as tall with fewer shoots than Giganteues that has been making two shoots at a time, making 4 in the last 4 weeks.
Tomorrow Monday Oct 07 we will get 1.5" inches of rain and that's a good thing for October in Florida. I got all my rain barrels filled and that should last about 2 weeks if we don't have too much dry wind.

Well they are definitely making some progress. At least 6 of them have white little nubs getting bigger. The D. Asper S2s are so small in comparison I will need a magnifier to see any change. After I made the video I noticed a little hair starting to grow on the nub end and that's probably mold so I gave that one another bath in The Amazing Dr Zymes solution and rinsed it and put it back. I look at these tiny specks and know they will be giants someday. Even the Aspers will be and I still have 4 more types of seeds to open and get started.

These are the Brown Thrasher babies a week after the last one hatched. They are supposed to be leaving the nest in about 2 more days, or at least according to what I heard from the internet.. It doesn't look like they are worried about it yet.

Found a new culm growing from my seed grown bamboo. I just planted these in the ground a week or two ago and I saw this pencil sized shoot today. I'm guessing it might get 3 feet or more longer in the next few weeks..
I had at least 1000 seeds at a time trying to sprout for months in 2018. Only a few of any of these seeds sprouted and none of them survived.
It's a whole new story in 2019 with Yunnan Bamboo seeds. I have germination rates as high as 90% with some species. I got 60% with the Sinicus seeds.

My first attempts were on a few pieces that were over 24 hours old. So today I cut and went straight to treating within 90 minutes. The first step is a good cleaning with dog shampoo and a brush. Without scrubbing off all the gook and scale you will never get a seal.
Within a few seconds of applying 20 psi water came dripping out of every place where a branch was cut off and out the other end within 20 seconds. A quart comes out in about 30 minutes. Then when leaned upright the solution continues to flow through.

Not a lot of sound but the bamboo can dance and make all sorts of sounds in the wind. Japanese hold bamboo as a spiritual plant.

My peppers are doing great after the storm. This whole season was very wet and I think it helped the peppers. This plant was only 16" tall at most and now its 36" and growing like crazy. More little peppers popping.

Just learned last night that my good friend Ken Glover passed away after a stroke. Ken moved to Hawaii in April and was excited as I'm sure anyone would be to be in a new part of the world.
I hadn't heard from him in some time almost a month when I texted him. I tried a few more times and called and everything went straight to voicemail. I asked someone last night and found out he passed away.
I don't know what I will do without his help on my website.
He is greatly missed for sure.

Ken was a internet visionary who started with his video log site back in 2007. He called it ontheairtv.com and gave users from the old live video site a place to go and call home. The site and users and things changed over time and some of us stayed connected for all that time. Ken did everything he could to get that community of good users together and motivated to make more vlogs. Well the internet landscape was changing as was the people on the site and with Ken as well. Ken had work, housing, health, family and other things like we all do. He kept his goal and tried to keep vlogging alive.
He will be greatly missed.

Just admit it, goat eyes look weird! It's the pupils, mostly, but goats can also do things with their eyes that humans just can't. A study out of the University of California, Berkeley looked at a plethora of different animal eyeballs and discovered a fascinating trend.

They conclude that pupil shape and size plays a key role in the grand scheme of evolution. And with all the advantages of goat eyes, you might even start to get jealous.

The thylacine, aka Tasmanian tiger, was thought to go extinct in 1936. However, a research team at Australia's James Cook University has hope that this is not case. They are installing cameras across areas where tigers have supposedly appeared, in hope that they can be seen alive for the first time in over 80 years.

University of Utah researchers captured footage of an American badger burying an entire cow. The American badger is known to store and bury food it finds, but nothing of this size.

The badger stumbled upon the cow carcass. It weighed 50 pounds - about 4x more than the badger. It took about 5 days in all to bury. Researcher Ethan Frehner was amazed, saying, “It’s a lot of excavation engineering they put into accomplishing this.”

The discovery proves badgers can "cache" big animals. Biologists say this could lead to big benefits for cattle ranchers in the West, as the burial process can stop diseases before they spread.
